The 2022 Nissan Rogue Gets A More Powerful Turbo Engine And Better Fuel Economy

In just the second model year of the third-generation Nissan Rogue, Nissan is providing a major upgrade in the powertrain department. With a new engine, the 2022 Nissan Rogue produces 11% more horsepower and 24% more torque than the outgoing 2.5-liter engine, which we already praised for its big improvement in acceleration.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue will be powered by a 1.5-liter engine. It's turbocharged and uses something Nissan calls variable compression. The result isn't just more power and torque – 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque – but also the best fuel economy of any gas-engine SUV in its class. The all-wheel-drive 2022 Rogue is rated at a combined 7.6 L/100 kilometres, an improvement from the 2021 Rogue's already impressive 8.3 L/100km

While this engine is new to the Rogue, variable compression turbos aren't new to Nissan. The brand has already incorporated VC turbos in the Altima and Infiniti's QX50 after developing the system for two decades. In other words, this is proven technology.

Nissan is doing much more than adding the new 1.5 turbo to enhance the Rogue for 2022. There's also a new transmission with a broader gear ratio spread and 32% less friction than the 2021 Rogue, which along with added horsepower and torque contributes to the Rogue's swifter acceleration and improved fuel efficiency. There's also a new engine mounting system under the hood to reduce engine vibration.

At least for the time being, Nissan's 2.5-liter engine will still be the standard engine in the Rogue S. But in the Rogue SV, Rogue SV Premium, Rogue SL, and Rogue Platinum, the 201-horsepower turbo will now be the powerplant of choice.

Year after year, the Rogue is Nissan Canada's best-selling model. Through the first nine months of 2021, Rogue sales jumped 38%. We're certain that Nissan's underhood improvements are going to make the 2022 Rogue an even hotter ticket.
